You probably learned about American history in school, but have you ever seen it summarized in an easy-to-understand infographic? Check out this American History Timeline infographic created by Lin Zagorski, and get a quick overview of the events that shaped our nation.
The Beginning of America
The timeline starts with Christopher Columbus’ arrival in the New World in 1492. You’ll notice that the timeline doesn’t start with Native American history, which is unfortunate but sadly common in American history education. However, the timeline does include the arrival of the Pilgrims, the establishment of the thirteen colonies, and the start of the Revolutionary War.
The Birth of a Nation
In 1776, the colonists declared their independence from England, and a new nation was born. The Constitution was ratified in 1788, and George Washington was inaugurated as the first president of the United States in 1789. The timeline notes important events in early American history, such as the Louisiana Purchase, Lewis and Clark’s expedition, and the War of 1812.
A Nation Divided
The Civil War is arguably the most significant event in American history, and the timeline dedicates a significant amount of space to it. The timeline covers the conflict from the Missouri Compromise of 1820 to the Emancipation Proclamation to the eventual surrender of the Confederacy. The timeline also notes significant events in the Reconstruction period and the legalization of Jim Crow laws.
World Wars and Civil Rights
The timeline covers American involvement in both World War I and World War II, including the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the development and use of the atomic bomb. The timeline also includes events that led to the Vietnam War, such as the Gulf of Tonkin incident and the anti-war movement. The Civil Rights Movement is covered in detail, from the Brown v. Board of Education decision to the March on Washington to the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Modern America
The timeline ends with the presidency of Barack Obama, but it also notes important events in recent American history, such as the September 11 attacks and the Iraq War. The timeline highlights the achievements and struggles of marginalized groups, such as the LGBTQ+ rights movement, the Women’s March, and the Black Lives Matter movement. It also notes important technological advancements, such as the creation of the internet and the advent of social media.
While the American History Timeline infographic can’t cover every event and person that has influenced American history, it provides an excellent overview of the most significant events.
