So without further ado, let’s dive into the beautiful practice of praying the Rosary with this helpful guide from DCDSB. First, take a moment to gather your Rosary beads and find a peaceful, quiet space where you can focus on your prayers. You may want to light a candle or play some soft music to help create a peaceful atmosphere. Start by making the Sign of the Cross and saying the Apostles’ Creed: “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.” Next, hold the first bead and say the Our Father prayer: “Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.” Move to the next three beads and say the Hail Mary prayer on each one: “Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.” On the next bead, say the Glory Be prayer: “Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.” Now comes the heart of the Rosary: the mysteries. There are four sets of mysteries, each with five meditations on key events in the life of Jesus and Mary. As you pray these mysteries, focus on the events themselves and what they mean for your life today. The first set of mysteries are the Joyful Mysteries, which focus on the joys of the birth and childhood of Jesus: 1. The Annunciation: The angel Gabriel appears to Mary and tells her that she will conceive and bear a son, who will be the Savior of the world. 2. The Visitation: Mary goes to visit her cousin Elizabeth, who is also pregnant with a child who will become John the Baptist. Elizabeth recognizes the greatness of Mary’s child and praises him. 3. The Nativity: Jesus is born in a stable in Bethlehem, and Mary and Joseph lay him in a manger. 4. The Presentation: Mary and Joseph present Jesus in the Temple, where Simeon and Anna prophesy about his future. 5. The Finding of Jesus in the Temple: After Jesus goes missing for three days, Mary and Joseph find him in the Temple, where he is listening and asking questions of the religious leaders. As you meditate on these mysteries, imagine yourself witnessing these remarkable events and think about what they mean for your own spiritual journey. You may find new insights into your own life and faith as you contemplate the mysteries of the Joyful Mysteries. After completing the five meditations on the Joyful Mysteries, move on to the next set of mysteries, the Luminous Mysteries. These mysteries focus on the public ministry of Jesus and his teachings: 1. The Baptism in the Jordan: Jesus is baptized by John the Baptist and the Holy Spirit descends upon him, revealing him to be the Son of God. 2. The Wedding at Cana: Jesus performs his first miracle, turning water into wine at the wedding feast in Cana. 3. The Proclamation of the Kingdom: Jesus preaches the coming of the Kingdom of God and calls on all to repent and believe in the Gospel. 4. The Transfiguration: Jesus takes Peter, James, and John up a mountain and is transformed before them, revealing his divinity to them. 5. The Institution of the Eucharist: At the Last Supper, Jesus institutes the sacrament of the Eucharist, commanding his disciples to do this in memory of him. As you meditate on the Luminous Mysteries, think about the teachings of Jesus and how they apply to your life today. How can you follow his example and serve others with love and compassion? Next come the Sorrowful Mysteries, which focus on the suffering and death of Jesus: 1. The Agony in the Garden: Jesus prays in the garden of Gethsemane, agonizing over the suffering he knows he must endure. 2. The Scourging at the Pillar: Jesus is brutally whipped and beaten by the Roman soldiers. 3. The Crowning with Thorns: Roman soldiers mock Jesus and crown him with thorns. 4. The Carrying of the Cross: Jesus carries his cross to Calvary, falling three times along the way. 5. The Crucifixion: Jesus is nailed to the cross and dies, crying out to God in his final moments. As you meditate on the Sorrowful Mysteries, contemplate the immense suffering Jesus endured for the sake of our sins. How can you live in gratitude for his sacrifice and seek to live a life of service and love for others? Finally, the Glorious Mysteries focus on the triumph of Jesus over sin and death: 1. The Resurrection: Jesus rises from the dead, revealing his divinity and the power of God to conquer death. 2. The Ascension: Jesus ascends into heaven, promising to return one day and inviting us to take up his mission. 3. The Descent of the Holy Spirit: The Holy Spirit comes upon the disciples at Pentecost, empowering them to spread the Gospel to all nations. 4. The Assumption of Mary: Mary is assumed into heaven, body and soul, as a sign of her unique role in the salvation of humanity. 5. The Coronation of Mary: Mary is crowned as Queen of Heaven and Earth, joining her son in glory and interceding for us before God. As you meditate on the Glorious Mysteries, contemplate the hope and joy that come from knowing that Jesus has triumphed over death and opened the way to eternal life. How can you live in light of this hope and share it with others? After completing the last set of mysteries, end your prayer session with the Hail Holy Queen: “Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve: to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus, O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary! Pray for us, O holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.” Finish with the Sign of the Cross: “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.” Congratulations! You have just completed a beautiful and powerful practice of prayer and meditation.
