What is Sudoku?
If you haven’t heard of Sudoku before, don’t worry – I got you. Sudoku is a puzzle game that originated in Japan in the 1980s. The objective of the game is to fill a 9x9 grid with numbers so that each column, row, and 3x3 sub-grid contains every number from 1 to 9.
How to Play Sudoku
Playing Sudoku may seem difficult at first, but it’s actually pretty simple once you get the hang of it. Here are the basic rules:
- The 9x9 Sudoku board is comprised of 81 cells, which are further divided into 3x3 sub-grids
- The board will contain some pre-filled cells, called “givens”
- The objective is to fill each cell with a number so that each column, row, and 3x3 sub-grid contains every number from 1 to 9
- Numbers can only appear once in each row, column, and sub-grid
Tips for Solving Sudoku
Now that you know the basics, here are some tips to help you solve the puzzle:
- Start with the “givens” and work from there
- Use process of elimination to determine which numbers can go in each cell
- Focus on one number at a time, and use the process of elimination to narrow down where that number can go
- Don’t be afraid to start over if you get stuck – sometimes a fresh start can help you see the puzzle in a new way
