Printable Ireland Flag

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, everyone! Today, we celebrate the rich culture and history of Ireland, and what better way to do that than by learning about and appreciating the Irish flag?

The Meaning of the Irish Flag

Irish flagThe Irish flag, also known as the national flag of Ireland, consists of three equal vertical stripes: green, white, and orange. While the colors themselves are not unique to Ireland, their arrangement and symbolism are deeply significant.

The green stripe stands for the Catholic majority of Ireland, as green has long been associated with Catholicism in Ireland. The orange stripe represents the Protestant minority, as orange was the color of William of Orange, who overthrew the Catholic King James II in 1688. The white stripe in the middle symbolizes peace and unity between these two groups.

Fun Facts About The Irish Flag

Irish flag on the wallDid you know that the Irish flag is relatively new, having been officially adopted as the national flag just over 100 years ago, in 1919? Prior to that, a number of different flags were used to represent Ireland, including the harp on a green field (which is still used as the symbol of Ireland today) and the gold harp on a blue field, which was the emblem of the Irish Free State.

Another interesting fact about the Irish flag is that it is always flown with the green stripe on the left-hand side, or the side closest to the flagpole. This is the case even when the flag is being flown vertically, as it often is on St. Patrick’s Day.
