Iron on my Mind
When I saw this papercraft, I couldn’t help but think about how much Black folks have always loved superheroes like Iron Man. We see ourselves in these characters, who often have to navigate two worlds: their own personal lives, and their superhero alter-egos. For Black folks living in America, the duality of our existence is often just as pronounced, if not more so.
Superheroes in Our DNA
It’s no secret that Black folks have a long history of creating superheroes, too. From the all-Black superhero team The Crew to the Afrofuturistic world of Wakanda in Black Panther, Black people have always been at the forefront of creating narratives that center our experiences.
Tools of the Trade
This papercraft is just one example of how we can create our own versions of superhero armor. It’s important that we have representations of ourselves as superheroes and not just sidekick or supporting characters. We need to see ourselves as the powerful beings we truly are.
