Ingredients:

Gingerbread House TemplateTo make the gingerbread dough, you gonna need:

  • 3 cups (360g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (113g) unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) molasses

Instructions:

1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, allspice, and salt.

2. In a large bowl, using an electric mixer, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes. Add the egg and molasses and beat until well combined.

3. Gradually add the dry ingredients and beat until the dough comes together.

4. Divide the dough in half and shape each into a disk. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or overnight.

5. When ready to bake, preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

6. On a lightly floured work surface, roll one dough disk to about 1/4 inch (6mm) thickness. Cut out the house pieces using the template provided and transfer to the prepared baking sheets. Re-roll any scraps and repeat until all house pieces are cut out.

Decorated Gingerbread House7. Bake the gingerbread pieces for 10-12 minutes or until lightly golden brown around the edges. Let cool completely on the baking sheets.

8. Once cooled, use royal icing to assemble the gingerbread house. Let dry completely before decorating with candies and more icing.

Notes:

- This recipe makes enough dough for one gingerbread house with a few leftover pieces for snacking. You can easily double the recipe if you want to make more houses or cookies.

- The royal icing recipe can be found on the back of the meringue powder container or online.

Get Creative:

Colorful Gingerbread HouseDon’t be afraid to let your imagination run wild with the decorations. You can use anything from gumdrops and candy canes to pretzels and cereal. The possibilities are endless!

Tips:

- If your dough is too sticky, add a little more flour until it’s easy to handle.

- Don’t be alarmed if your gingerbread pieces spread a little in the oven. Use a sharp knife to trim any excess while they’re still warm.
