How to Use Five Frame Cards in a Split Class

Teacher working with childrenFirst things first, ensure that all the students in your split class have their own five frame card. You can make them out of cardstock or purchase them online. Once everyone has their card, here are a few activities you can do:

1. Flashcards

FlashcardsWrite numbers on flashcards and have students write the answer on their five frame card. For example, hold up a card with the number 3, and have students fill in three spots on their five frame card.

2. Addition and Subtraction

Addition and SubtractionUse manipulatives, like counters, and have students practice addition and subtraction on their five frame card. For example, give a student ten counters and ask them to put two counters in the first slot, and three counters in the second slot. Then, ask them how many counters they have left, and have them put the remaining counters in the last slot on their five frame card.

3. Multiplication and Division

Multiplication and DivisionAs your students become more advanced, they can practice multiplication and division using their five frame card. For example, ask the student to fill in one slot with the number 2, and then fill in the rest of the slots with the product of 2 multiplied by each number up to 5.
