Dreidel Game Rules Printable - How to Play Dreidel

Dreidel Game Rules Printable - How to Play DreidelThe Dreidel game is played with a four-sided spinning top, called a Dreidel, which has a Hebrew letter on each side. The letters stand for the Hebrew phrase “Nes Gadol Haya Sham” which means “A Great Miracle Happened There”.

Each player starts the game with an equal number of game pieces, such as pennies, candies or raisins. They put one game piece into a central pot called the “kupah”. Before each turn, the players agree on the amount of game pieces to be put into the kupah (usually one piece).

The game is played in turns. At the start of each turn, a player spins the Dreidel. Depending on which side the Dreidel lands, the player either takes or gives away game pieces from the kupah:

  • Nun - Do nothing (no action required)
  • Gimel - Take all (take all the game pieces from the kupah)
  • Hey - Take half (take half of the game pieces from the kupah, rounded up if an odd number of pieces)
  • Shin - Put in (put one game piece into the kupah)

The game continues until one player has all the game pieces, or until the agreed-on number of rounds has been played. If a player does not have any game pieces left, they are out of the game.
